Rehoboth annual tree lighting set
The city will soon be aglow with Christmas spirit | By Mary Daisey Shockley | Bethany Beach Wave
Nov 25, 2009

Every year on Thanksgiving weekend, hundreds of Rehoboth Beach residents gather near their city's bandstand to sing Christmas carols, drink hot chocolate and watch the annual tree lighting ceremony. This year's event is slated to take place from 6 to 7 p.m., Nov. 27.

"It's definitely a hometown tradition; the whole community gets together," said Jenny Barger, director of Rehoboth Beach Main Street, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the city's business district. "It's a good way to cap off the Black Friday shopping day."

This year, Georgetown resident Jay Schofield donated his tree to the city. The tree was originally purchased for his family's holiday celebration more than 20 years ago.

"After Christmas, we planted it in the ground," he said. "It eventually grew to 30- to 35-feet-tall."

When the tree grew so big that Schofield was concerned about it growing to close to the garage and house, he knew something had to be done.

"I knew it was too nice of a tree to cut down and let it die," he said. "I'm definitely going to miss it. It has sentimental value to us since we bought it when our kids were young and now they have their kids."

But the family is excited to share the tree with the community.

"We've enjoyed it all these years and now many more people will get to enjoy it," he said.

Barger looked forward to selecting the right tree for the event.

"We had multiple requests," she said. "We would ride around looking at all these different trees deciding which one to select."

Corey Groll, program director for the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand, said the event is perfect for the family.

"We will have hot chocolate and an appearance by Santa," he said. "There will be an assortment of local singers leading the caroling on stage."

Barger said the event is a great reason to visit the downtown shopping area.

"We encourage the community to also dine out at one of our wonderful restaurants that evening," she said.
