Rehoboth Beach, Delaware - 2.5 Hours from D.C.
Flying Compass
Mar 1, 2010

While neighboring Lewes comes across as a quaint little town with lots of charm and history - and you might think everyone knows everyone - Rehoboth (Ra-hoe-beth) Beach is in complete contrast. It’s a very busy tourist destination even before the summer season arrives.

The public beach sits at the end of Rehoboth Avenue, near the bandshell, where eastbound visitors make a u-turn just before the boardwalk. As fences, sand dunes and sea oats sit higher than the street, visitors will need to park their automobiles in order to enjoy the view.

The downtown corridor is lined with shops and restaurants that sit back off the wide sidewalks. Many of the stores have moved their racks and merchandise outside into the sunshine to catch the attention of those passing by…hoping to entice them to take home a souvenir or two.

Along the beach, above the shoreline, is an expansive boardwalk that begins at Surfside Place to the north and continues to Laurel Street to the south. It’s widest around Rehoboth Avenue. Benches line the sides for added people watching. During peak times the walkway is limited only to pedestrians. Forget bringing your roller skates or blades and skateboards. Bicyclers can ride until mid-morning before things start to get crowded.

While the music began playing in 1963 on what was then the grass, concerts nowadays are held in the new bandstand each summer from Thursday to Sunday evenings. Entertainment genres include jazz, patriotic tunes, blues, soul, rock, classic rock, orchestral, choral, performing arts, comedy and even childrens’ shows. Bench seats are available for those who come early.

To access Rehoboth Beach’s public beach from Highway 1 (Coastal Highway), take Rehoboth Avenue or Alternate Highway 1 east. Follow the traffic circle around the miniature lighthouse. The street becomes two lanes in either direction and businesses crop up on both sides of the now divided road. Metered parking, available on both sides up and down the road and along neighboring streets, is observed from May to September and rates vary depending on proximity to the sand. Parking permits are required for other on-street parking for this same time period.

If this is your first visit and you get claustrophobic in congested places, Alternate Highway 1 flows south or to the right at Bayard Avenue, eventually connecting back with Highway 1.
