Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers New This Year! |
|
PERFORMANCE DATE: 7/14
TYPE: Latin Jazz
WEBSITE:
DESCRIPTION:
GRAMMY AWARD NOMINEE: Known as the "Godfather of Acid Jazz", Timbalero Henry "Pucho" Brown was a pivotal figure in the Latin boogaloo movement that fused Latin, jazz and funk styles during the sixties. He released a staggering 8 albums between 1966 and 69 for the Prestige label. Adopting a dirtier street soul attitude, the "Yaina" and "Super Freak" albums reflected a change in musical tastes as the 60s became the 70s. Unfortunately for Pucho the 70s saw a drop in his popularity. He took to playing hotel gigs in the relative obscurity of the Catskill Mountains resorts. Returning to New York in 1992 Pucho found that he had been re-discovered by a younger crowd of music fans. The renewed interest in Pucho stemmed from the UK jazz dance scene which championed a cultural mix of sounds including boogaloo, street soul, Latin and Brazilian music. Since then Pucho has toured the world with his Latin Soul Brothers and recorded new albums that celebrate the unique Pucho blend. In 1999 Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers recorded a new album for CuBop, the San Francisco label responsible for re-releasing many of Pucho's past projects. Pucho has recently been added into the Latin Music Hall of Fame! |

Suddenly, a huge, mysterious, veg-ravaging "beast" begins attacking the town's sacred vegetable plots at night, and the competition hostess, Lady Tottington, commissions Anti-Pesto to catch it and save the day. Lying in wait, however, is Lady Tottington's snobby suitor, Victor Quartermaine, who'd rather shoot the beast and secure the position of local hero-not to mention Lady Tottingon's hand in marriage. With the fate of the competition in the balance, Lady Tottington is eventually forced to allow Victor to hunt down the vegetable chomping marauder. Jacey Falk New This Year! |
|
PERFORMANCE DATE: 8/04
TYPE: Jazz
WEBSITE:
DESCRIPTION:
Jacey Falk is a blues/rhythm and blues/jazz singer who demonstrates an exuberant delivery and infectious appeal on his debut recording, From a Place Within —so retro, in a way, as to be fresh and new. Jacey Falk sounds like Gene McDaniels's son, not only vocally but also in his polished production. His influences are Charles Brown, Abbey Lincoln, Carmen McRae, Ruth Brown. Blues, soul, funk, and gospel—Falk's deep-yet joyous spirituality asserts itself on "Dancing in the Yard," Abbey Lincoln's "The Music is Magic," and "A Circle of Love." Ruth Brown, one of Falk's idols, performs a soulful duet with the young singer: "I've Been There," a song about learning from life's ups and downs.
Uplifting sounds, great horn charts, get up out of the chair and dance stuff, especially "Dancing in the Yard." A palpable and infectious energy from Mr. Falk. You can tell just by listening that you'd come out of a live show smiling, the same way you come away from listening to From a Place Within. |

Down Island Dogs |
|
PERFORMANCE DATE: 8/18
TYPE: Carribean Island Music
WEBSITE:
DESCRIPTION:
Twenty years ago, bandleader and soloist Tony Juliano moved to the Virgin Islands. He now spends part of the year there, and the rest of the time near his hometown, Philadelphia. All that island time is obvious in the genuine Caribbean feeling he brings to the music. Tony and his band, Down Island Dogs, play ... reggae, Latin rock, calypso, ska, bossa nova, soca, mambo, some rock ‘n roll, some blues, some folk music, and all things quasi-tropical. They perform creative arrangements of music by popular artists such as ... Bob Marley, Santana, Jimmy Buffett, Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Cliff, Mark Anthony, The Kingston Trio, Paul Simon and many, many others. The group size changes to fit the assignment: solo, duo, trio for smaller or low-key situations; 4-to-6 piece band for larger occasions. Tony Juliano and his partners in crime pride themselves on being great entertainers. They don’t just stand there and play their songs. They generate excitement, involve the audience, take requests, hold contests, and they even practice the forgotten art of serenading, or acoustic strolling. The sound of Down Island Dogs mixes both Island and Stateside influences - with the emphasis on Island. Plus, there’s a fantabulous repertoire of songs, too numerous to list, including their own original tunes. This hybrid approach to music results in unique rhythmic inventions ... grooves that Tony & the boys have given names like fatback mambo, funky calypso, chabolero, skasanova ... always something new. It’s one thing to try and learn some tropical tunes. What makes Down Island Dogs stand out is a true understanding of the Caribbean styles. And then there’s no doubt ... because it moves you. |
